Module 3: Planning, Instruction, and Assessment Approaches in Different Curricular Designs

The Process By Jennifer Simpson and Luke Nakonechny  To begin our analysis we again started building a mind map.  We wanted to connect the professional context to each of the philosophies.  As we worked through we found that the actions split into two philosophical themes: learner centered and subject centered.  We added the planning, instruction and assessment for these philosophies along with questions to focus for the teacher to our table.   https://docs.google.com/drawings/d/1kmvyrE-mRu9qcKKMa7KopiUzNiScS3aVUOfWkknD0gA/edit?usp=sharing  The link to our table is here. Module 2: Philosophical Foundations of Education and Curriculum Design Planning

By Jennifer Simpson and Luke Nakonechny The Process To begin establishing the relationships between conceptions of curriculum, philosophy and curriculum designs we brainstormed and created a mind map from our notes.  Through this we were able to see many connections. The purpose of this mind map was to help us make these important connections and solidify our understanding of the reading.   Our goal was to create a concise, easy to read table that clearly outlined the relationships.  We wanted to add practical examples that brought these connections to life. Through the work completed on our mind map we were able to pull the key information out to summarize it onto a table.  The table is intended as our completed visual but we have included a link to the mind map for those interested in our process. Here is a link to our table. Here is a link to the mind map if you would like to see our process. The Discussion The relationship between cu...

1. Conceptions of Curriculum

Questions Considered: why some conceptions of curriculum continue to be used over time or are considered to be mainstream approaches, while others are not? how can I use conceptions of curriculum as tools or frameworks to analyze planning, instruction, and assessment within my practice? Teachers are generally concerned with the curriculum document that applies to their particular province or subject area that they teach.  To this point in my teaching career, I would fit into this category where I have rarely looked beyond curriculum outside of Alberta, with the exception of investigated curriculum of other subject areas when considering potential cross curricular tasks or looking into alternative activities for my classes. Different approaches to curriculum and understanding those different approaches does provide insight into what the student/teacher experience will look like.  Understanding the framework by which curriculum is creat...

Welcome to my blog that will showcase my progression through the Queen's University course 810: Integrated Planning Instruction and Assessment. The intention of this blog is to demonstrate my learning of the required outcomes of the course.  However, to go further I also want this blog to be a platform for discussion, reflection, and growth in my professional practice.  Please feel free to get in touch, provide feedback, and comment on what you see.  I look forward to working with a new set of colleagues! Cheers! Luke
